Just curious now that you personally use phpcow do you recommend it to others if your ever asked about a good CMS?
I go back and forth on it because phpcow is truly a unique type os CMS IMHO especially since it does take some getting used to since you can't simply get it working with basic html knowledge...you need to learn their "cow"language as I call it.
Anyone in here ever use Joomla? How do you feel the two of those compare?
Joomla has too many things (add-ons, templates, ...) that may distract you from focusing on developing the contents. It's powerful and free. You can also buy excellent templates to turn your sites into queens (Just found out that one of the most famous Joomla template providers is a Vietnamese company:
http://www.joomlart.com).
PhpCow is more secure, as far as I know. I just don't like the slow update and upgrade from their development team. PhpCow is very potential if the company pays more attention to improve their business.
I have to agree that joomla almost has too much to offer. I am about to start a new client that needs a good cms for his members section. We keep going back and forth between the cow and joomla. I know the cow we should be able to add his widgets, not sure how to handle that in joomle since I'm not as familiar with it. Also I hate all the module setup in joomla, I find it very overwhelming so far to get things where I want them to be to look like a real site versus the basic 'joomla' look.
I do worry about joomla's security though, since it is free and used by so many I think more people are apt to try to hack it. I have never had a security breach with phpcow yet...and hope I never do LOL
We've used several different applications over the 7 years I've been involved with content management........Joomla, Drupal, Article Manager, Article Live, Vivvo, and PHPCOW.....so i think at this point I have a pretty good idea about the different scripts, and which ones are good/bad/ugly.
PHPCOW is by far the most feature rich and easy to work with......there are a lot of small, annoying bugs which make it a frustrating experience (I've touched on this in another post......but they are the editor, server load issues, encrypted software, grammar errors, and support).......that may sound like a lot.....but the positives way outweigh the negatives, and when you consider the price, its a very good solution.
Vivvo, sucks.......plain and simple....their support makes PHPCOWs support look like Mary Poppins, and the software itself is no better than beta quality.
Article Live and Article Manager are ok....they are easy to work with....but the templates are horrendous, and they don't have many of the features PHPCOW has.
Drupal, Joomla, and a lot of the other "Free" solutions can be customized to offer a lot of the same features that PHPCOW has, but you had better be a coding expert, or have a lot of money. I've personally seen quotes from $2500 to $3000 for Drupal installations that offer a lot of the functionality that you'll find with PHPCOW.
So in the end, PHPCOW is what I recommend......hopefully the support will improve, and hopefully Version 3 will fix many of the issues we've seen with Version 2.
Hi Capper,
Great to see you here

I read your posts on digitalpoint forum and find it very useful.
I am also longing for the PhpCow 3. After two years of running this CMS, we now need more functionalities and updates. I know that the development team is working on the new release but it's still too long to wait.
